The last console generation was a long one, the longest one yet. It lasted 8 years, and the PS3/360 are still chugging along. The PS3 started off slow, but slowly but surely built up an incredible lineup of games. Here is my personal Top 5.
1. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
A showstopper of a game. Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune was very good, but Among Thieves blew it out of the water. Nearly every chapter of this game had an incredible moment. So many games these days get bogged down with unnecessary RPG elements or customization; not Uncharted. It puts the narrative, the gameplay, the scenery and the characters first, and gets rid of anything that might’ve slowed it down. I’ve gone back to it multiple times and it still amazes me 5 years later.
2. Fallout 3
Fallout 3 is astounding for the world it created; the wasteland of post apocalyptic Washington D.C. was dripping with hopeless beauty and memorable characters. The level of choice is still unparalleled in terms of how you want to play or the decisions you make, and that adds to its massive replay value. And the writing is so good, you’ll want to play it differently to see the outcomes (in no other game is it more fun to be evil). Over a hundred hours later, there’s plenty left for me to discover.
3. The Last of Us
Following the Uncharted trilogy, Naughty Dog didn’t go the easy route and create a spin off that would have no doubt sold millions, the made one of the best games of all time in The Last of Us. It’s got a harrowing, heart wrenching story that always feels grounded in reality and humanity. The gameplay is fittingly brutal and extremely intense (play on higher difficulties). If you don’t get the feels playing this one, you may not have a soul.
4. Red Dead Redemption
Rockstar created its best experience of all with RDR. A stunning open world with plenty of side quests and secrets to discover, hilarious writing with plenty of satire (classic Rockstar, pretty much) a riveting story with one of the best endings in game history.. a kickass multiplayer mode and oh yeah, one of the best DLC’s of all time in Undead Nightmare. GTA5 was incredible too, but it didn’t stick with me the way RDR did; here’s to hoping we see the sequel revealed this June at E3!!
Certainly the only game on the list I beat in one sitting; but oh what a sitting it was. A game so beautiful that it brings many who play it to tears without a single word of spoken or written dialogue. thatgamecompany made something truly special with Journey; and anyone that hasn’t played must immediately remedy that situation.
Honorable mentions: Bioshock, The Walking Dead Season 1, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Rayman Origins/Legends, Street Fighter 4.
